Soaring raw material prices and climate change
impacts remind us regularly of the need to manage our natural
resources and environment sustainably. Newscasts also report
regularly on major natural hazards, whether floods, earthquakes or
droughts. The importance of the services that natural ecosystems
provide us, both to underpin and protect our lifestyles is becoming
increasingly apparent. Sustainability has become a central
concept.
SIPU International can provide a variety of
services relating to this sector, in both urban and rural
settings. We have experience in conducting urban sustainability
assessments. We have staff that have worked in integrated coastal
management and in hazard or risk management. SIPU provided support
to Thailand in developing a national strategy on sustainable
coastal development, following the tsunami of late 2004. On behalf
of Sida, the company is responsible for an advanced international
training programme on Local Environmental Management in Urban
Areas.
Because of the integrated nature of our
services we can combine subject competence with skills in
organisational management, institutional development, as well as
all aspects of project management. Thus SIPU International has been
able to work with the Albanian Ministry of Environment, Forestry
and Water Management to develop an Operation Plan; provide the
Swedish Environmental Protection Agency with Capacity Support
services to a project in Macedonia; conduct evaluation exercise
such as the appraisal of the programme document to 'Strengthen
Environmental Management in Lao PDR;' and evaluate the Swedish
Environmental Protection Agency's cooperation projects in the
Western Balkans.
